On-site support for 15 pumps at Aramco's Jazan Refinery

Client: Saipem

End User: Aramco

Country: Saudi Arabia

Year: 2015

Supply: 15 PTO 3/160 Pumping Units
Industry: Residue Upgrading and Gasification

Project Context

In 2015, Saipem initiated a project to supply an IGCC (Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle) facility for Aramco in Saudi Arabia, aimed at producing hydrogen, steam, syngas, and electricity through the gasification of refinery residues. Peroni participated in the project by supplying 15 PTO3/160 pumping units, which are essential for feeding the gasification reactors that are critical for the plant's operation.

Initial Challenge

During the construction phase of the plant, the need for better alignment of the provided bases for the pumping units became apparent. This adjustment was necessary to ensure, in compliance with project specifications, the long-term mechanical reliability of the pumping units regarding vibrations.

Solution and Intervention

Peroni promptly responded to the challenge, mobilizing immediately to find a solution on-site. The project team worked to modify the bases, properly aligning them according to project specifications. This intervention, which included sourcing a local supplier for the base modifications and new alignments, did not affect the project timelines but ensured an excellent outcome and complete customer satisfaction. Thanks to Peroni's swift reaction, the intervention did not impact the commissioning schedule of the IGCC facility.

Project Phases

2015: Project initiation
2017: Identification of the alignment issue
2017-2018: Completion of base modifications
2021-2022: Mechanical preparation of the plant leading to commissioning and startup

Collaboration and Results

Peroni collaborated with Saipem for about three years until the machines were commissioned. After Saipem delivered the project, the relationship transitioned directly between Peroni and Aramco. To this day, our after-sales service supports Aramco in Jazan with a continuous supply of spare parts and assistance.

Key Project Highlights

1. Customer Loyalty: Saipem was extremely satisfied with the outcome and the way initial difficulties were addressed, fostering a lasting trust-based relationship.

2. Visibility and Importance of the Site: The Jazan site is the largest IGCC facility and holds high visibility for both Saipem's engineering and the end client, Aramco.

3. Customer Satisfaction: Peroni's responsiveness and commitment to resolving issues ensured complete client satisfaction without impacting the plant startup timelines.

Conclusion

The IGCC project in Jazan exemplifies excellence in managing complex challenges and fostering collaboration among companies. Peroni's ability to swiftly respond to customer needs and provide effective solutions enabled Saipem to meet project timelines and solidified a trust-based relationship with Aramco.
