The project has deep roots, dating back to 1978/79 when Peroni pumps were installed for the operation of the Pro-Agroindustria fertilizer plant in Mexico. These pumps operated at full capacity until 1993/95, when political changes in the country led to the suspension of activities. The plant remained inactive for about 20 years, during which vegetation grew within the site and even in the machinery.
In 2015, a new political change in Mexico led to the decision to restore the plant. Pro-Agroindustria required that the existing machines not be replaced, but repaired and upgraded. The 12 pumps were then removed from Mexico and transported to Italy, to the Gaeta facility, for a complete restoration.
The pumps stayed at the Gaeta facility for about 6 months, during which all worn parts were replaced and the machines were brought back to full functionality. Once the restoration was completed, the pumps were returned to Mexico and preserved on-site, awaiting the full restoration of the plant.
The restoration work at the plant, overseen by Saipem, culminated in commissioning in 2018/19. The plant was restarted and operated continuously for 2 years. However, another political change led to a new suspension of activities until 2023, when the plant was once again put into operation and is currently functional.
1. Outcome: The end user, Pro-Agroindustria, was extremely satisfied with not having to change the design from the 1970s and with the restoration of full functionality of the original machines.
2. Support and Assistance: Our willingness to provide spare parts and assistance for pumping units delivered over 30 years prior was crucial to the success of the project.
3. Collaboration: The restoration was commissioned by Pro-Agroindustria and followed by Saipem, making this project one of the largest and historically significant for Peroni.
This project represents an extraordinary example of how the collaboration and stable know-how of Saipem and Peroni managed to bring historic machinery back into operation, ensuring customer satisfaction and the operational continuity of the end user's facility. The long and complex history of this project underscores the importance of solid engineering skills and reliable technical support.
